N.C.A.D. Diploma in Art & Design
Film Making - Project 5
This was one of the modules that I was most looking forward to, however, it was quite disappointing due to the fact that we did not have enough Apple Mac PCs in the classroom for each member of the class - which was frustrating as the introduction to this module in film making was demonstrated on Apples Final Cut Pro software! This meant that we could either (1) spend the majority of the lab classes waiting to have some time using an Apple Mac (2) use our own personal Mac (if you owned one) and buy the software, or, (3) teach yourself an alternative software - such as Premier Pro (I note that it was in fact another student in the class who advised me of the alternative Premier Pro software so that I could make the most of my time outside of the lab classes.)
Premier Pro is free to download for demo purposes and as I wanted to be able to work on my project from at home, I thus downloaded this demo software. This module was quite short and unfortunately the tutor did not have much time to answer queries (due to the large number of students in the class) and so it could be quite frustrating trying to teach yourself some techniques - even the most basic of techniques can be difficult and time consuming to figure out with no guidance.
This was not the first time that I had experienced this issue in relation to the large class sizes for the part time courses with N.C.A.D. The same issue had occurred during the Print modue (which was part of the A/C course in Drawing/Print/Mixed Media). Here the tutor had advised us that the class size had increased and this had therefore caused some issues in regards to answering queries / using the print press.

Our theme for this project was again open for us to decide upon. We were instructed to create a 2 minute long film piece of which we could just use our phone/camera to record the piece. We were then required to demonstrate a knowledge of certain techniques within this film piece; from as simple as uploading the clip to the software to using actions such as fading in and out of a picture and sound pieces, inserting different chapters/scenes and the overlaying of sound clips.
I continued with my ongoing theme of Containment for this project.
In many of my prior projects I had concentrated on the feeling of containment through symbols such as the overlaying of lines and spiderwebs which were to represent the idea of panicked and racing thoughts and the feeling of being captured, contained and smothered. I had previously touched on the idea of feeling contained through the duties and expectations of every day life (for example, contained within office buildings for work and the non stop busyness in the daily flow of a city).
For this project, I decided to again look at the idea of feeling contained within this constant ticking of life. This could, for example, be in how we feel caught up living to a clock in our daily work requirements and thus feel confined within an office building. As mentioned, I had previously looked at this subject right back in Project 3 of the Certificate in Drawing & Visual Investigation when I looked at the idea of Rhythm / Suffocation / Anxiety / Panic in the City. I had again used this idea during my Photography project for this Diploma course.
I first made a simple camera recording of myself walking along the city. I then insert sound clips from Ubuweb and used some of my prior photography project work for this piece. Finally, I inserted some wording that I had written specifically for this project.
