Gesture Life Drawing

Betty Edwards book,  The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, provides an insight and some practise exercises on important factors to be aware of when attempting still life drawing.  Edwards notes the importance of factors such as proportions, edges, spaces, relationships, lights and shadows, using graphite and paper towel (as in the technique Setting a Ground/Tonal Drawing), using ink and brush, hatching and crosshatching.

If you are serious about still life drawing then you can't really beat having an actual still life subject in front of you and I would recommend that you attend a series of classes aimed specifically at still life drawing.  This type of drawing skill is only touched upon in the Certificate and Diploma courses that I took with N.C.A.D.
